Magical Staff – Making of (EN)

Hey,

Before I decided to join to the sculpting challenge with theme Magical Staff, I was thinking about how to express Magical Staff in different way. And I was playing with idea – Organic Staff. My idea was Mr. Giger and his Alien art.

To most important rule of the challenge was to create a sculpt (no texture and postpro in photoshop) in 5 hours from assigned base meshes. The base meshes were 3 simple boxes and one cuboid – which shall create base for the staff. From the start I knew to create Facehugger (8 long legs and one long joined tail) just from simple box mesh will be difficlut. Any retopolgy or adding edgeloops were not allowed.
- It took me 4:40
- The video is 2,5x faster as I am

I. Part

Firstly, I set up whole scene, especially shortcuts for the brushes which I used the mostly. After I created any base of staff Iand I started with modeling Facehugger. I did the base for body, legs and tail. The problem is, if you have mesh which isn’t enough subdivided, you cannot make details on the places where you need or you cannot make a good pose for the model. Because of this problem I tried to achieve (mostly with brushes Smooth, Move) a topology where it was needed. I used a lot Pinch brush for a tail.

II. Part

When I finished the Facehugger I continued with modeling the Staff. In the part where is egg conected with Staff I made some “rootage”. For more variations I made hanging rootage on the end.

III. Part

I posed the Facehugger just with masking areas and Moveing, Rotating them. I wanted to avoid posing another Fhugger from start again, so I deleted the old one and copied aready posed Fhugger and then just updated pose.

IV. Part

When I finished the other end of the stalf I started posing te tail. Now with ZSphere. I exported and posed a lower lvl and than reimport current level.

V. Part

After tail I did rest of the stuff. I havent time so I had to be fast. After all I made some base (piece of ground) for staff. I though I’ll be on 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, the price was 7″ 3D Print (bacause of that I did some base-ground). Finally Im 4th.

Nazdarek,

Pred tym ako som sa rozhodol zapojit sa do sculpting sutaze s nazvom Magical Staff, som dlho rozmyslal, ako znazornit Magicku Palicu. Nechcel som urobit klasicku “Magicku Palicu”, preto som sa pohraval s myslienkou urobit organicku palicu. A tak ma napadlo, ze by som sa mohol isnpirovat panom Gigerom a jeho Alien umenim.

Najdolezitejsie pravidla sutaze boli vytvorit iba sculpt (bez textur a bez postpro v photoshope) za 5 hodin s vopred danych zakladnych modelov. Zakladne modely tvorili tri obycajne kocky a jeden kvader ktory mal tvorit zaklad palice. Uz hned na zaciatku mi bolo jasne, ze z obycajnej kocky vytvorit Facehuggera – ktory ma spolu 8 dlhych noh a jeden clankovity dlhy chvost, bude trosku oriesok a to hlavne kvoli tomu, ze ziadna retopologizacia modelu nebola podla pravidiel dovolena.

I. Part

Ako prve som si nastavil celu sceny a hlavne klavesove skratky na brushe ktore najcastejsie pouzivam pri praci. Hned po vymodelovani nejakeho zakladu palice som zacal modelovat Facehuggera. Urobil som zaklad tela a hned som vytiahol nohy a chvost. Problem je, ze ak model nie je dostatocne husty, nie je mozne vytvorit dostatocny detail, resp nie je mozne neskor model napozovat. Preto som sa snazil model roznymi sposobmi upravovat tak aby som na miestach kde potrebujem modelovat mal dostatocnu hustotu. Upravoval som hlavne brushmi Smooth, Move.. Na chvoste som potreboval urobit clankovanie a to som riesil brushom Pinch.

II. Part

Ked som dokoncil Facehuggera (neskor som ho cel SubTool nakopiroval), pokracoval som v modelovani palice. V casti kde sa vajce spaja s palicou som urobil nejake “korene” ktore som na koncoch nechal vysiet z palice.

III. Part

Facehuggera som pozoval klasicky maskovanim a naslednym pouzivanim Move a Rotate. Aby som nemusel pozovat aj druheho od zaciatku, tak som zmazal stareho a nakopiroval uz napozovaneho Facehuggera a iba pozmenil pozu.

IV. Part

Ked som domodeloval druhy koniec palice rozhodol som sa ze tentokrat napozujem chvost obycajne pomocou ZSphere. Akurat som to urobil tak ze som exportol a napozoval nizsi level a potom preimportoval cez obj konkretny level.

V. Part

Po chvoste som dorobil zvysok palice. Nemal som uz vela casu tak som to musel dost urychlit. Na konci som este urobil podstavec – kus zeme na ktorej ta palica stoji. Myslel som ze skoncim v prvej trojke, cenou by bol 7″ 3D Print, preto ten podstavec. Skoncil som stvrty.

3DT Challenge – Magical Staff

Hey,

I joined to the THE Sculpting Challenge – 009 – Magical Staff. Here is what I did. I made Magical Gigers Alien Staff . It took me 4:40. Ok, now some base rules for the staff:
- The staff is organic
- The eggpod kicking up the face huggers – its like a thrower (if someone turn against you the staff, you guys, have a big problem)
- The Alien tail – the other end of the stalf – serves as a melee weapon

So, here are some screenshots.
